You set up web filtering. You picked the categories. Then someone installs a free VPN extension, and for that laptop none of it applies any more.
Why VPNs defeat most filters
A personal VPN wraps all traffic in an encrypted tunnel to someone else's server. A filter that sits on the network, such as an office firewall or a DNS service, only sees a connection to the VPN provider. It cannot tell which sites are being visited inside the tunnel.
Remote work makes this worse. On home Wi-Fi there is often no office filter in the path at all.
The three ways in
People reach for:
- VPN desktop clients, installed like any other app.
- VPN installers downloaded from the provider's website.
- Browser extensions that act as a VPN or proxy, often installed in seconds with no admin rights.
Enforce on the device instead
Aavishield enforces policy in the agent on each device, so it does not depend on which network the laptop is on. VPN Control is on by default for every enrolled device and blocks:
- known VPN desktop clients,
- downloads of VPN installers,
- proxy sites, and
- known VPN and proxy browser extensions.
There is nothing to configure. Your web policy keeps applying at home, in a cafe and in a hotel.
What about a company VPN?
If your company relies on an approved VPN, talk to us during the demo about allowing it for your setup.
